DDLJ Becomes First Indian Film Honoured in London’s Movie Trail

Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, the legendary on-screen pair from the iconic 1995 film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ), are set to be immortalised in bronze at London’s famous Leicester Square. The statue, capturing their unforgettable pose from the film, will be the first-ever Indian movie tribute in the “Scenes in the Square” movie trail.

Scheduled for unveiling in Spring 2025, ahead of DDLJ’s 30th anniversary on October 20, this honour highlights the global popularity of Bollywood and the cultural impact of the film. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge was the directorial debut of Aditya Chopra and was produced by Yash Chopra under the Yash Raj Films banner.

The film, which follows the love story of Raj (Shah Rukh Khan) and Simran (Kajol) – two non-resident Indians who fall in love during a European vacation – was largely shot in the UK. Interestingly, the statue’s location is symbolic: in DDLJ, Raj and Simran first cross paths unknowingly at Leicester Square, right outside the Odeon and Vue cinemas.

Their statue will stand alongside global film icons like Harry Potter, Mr. Bean, Mary Poppins, Batman, and Wonder Woman. As per the Heart of London Business Alliance, this is a proud moment for Indian cinema. “It’s a fitting tribute to Bollywood’s global reach and a celebration of London’s rich diversity,” said Mark Williams, Deputy Chief Executive.

Akshaye Widhani, CEO of Yash Raj Films, called this a proud milestone, saying the statue not only honours the film’s 30-year legacy but also celebrates the worldwide appeal of Indian films.
